Road crash fatalities up

With almost two months gone in the year, the number of persons killed on the nation’s roadways has climbed by 21 per cent when compared to the corresponding period last year.

The Road Safety Unit in the transport ministry says up to yesterday, 63 persons have died in 54 fatal crashes since January 1.

Fifty two persons were killed in 52 fatal crashes over the corresponding period last year.

The increase in road fatalities comes amid projections of a 19 per cent decline this year.

A total of 380 persons died in motor vehicle crashes last year, the highest single-year figure in the last decade.

According to statistics released by the Road Safety Unit, motorcyclists accounted for 30 of the 63 persons killed in crashes this year.

A record 111 motorcyclists were killed last year.
