Samsung Now and Future…
The actual release date for a slew of Samsung products is eminent. We have the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge on the way, coupled with the Samsung Gear 360 camera and the Samsung Gear VR. The list goes on and on, but there are devices out now that are being over shadowed by the hype. One such device out now from Samsung is the Gear S2 and S2 Classic. This week, let's review something that's actually here.
What is the Gear S2?
The Samsung Gear S2 and S2 Classic are smartwatches, which is the new craze in the tech world these days. Smartwatches are used as an extension to your smartphone and come with many apps to help with fitness and organising your everyday tasks. The Gear S2 and S2 Classic are the first smartwatches from Samsung to feature a circular display. This simple feature makes the device feel more like a watch that you can wear than a gadget for geeks.
What is different this time around?
The Gear S2 and S2 Classic aren't the first smartwatches Samsung has done. Nope, this is actually their fourth instalment in their smartwatch line. This time around, a lot has changed and a couple features from the old haven't made it across to the new.
What is missing?
v No IR blaster - The ability to control devices (TV, radio etc) by a remote control app.
v No loudspeaker - You no longer have the ability to answer a call and hear the other person on a built-in loudspeaker, because there isn't any.
v No camera - No camera functionality at all.
The good news is that some new features have made it into the device, which means that all is not lost.
What's new this time around?
v Rotating bezel - Yes, the bezel of the watch is able to rotate and this is how you navigate through the menu options. This simple gesture makes the Gear S2 and S2 Classic easy and simple to navigate.
v Wireless charging - These new watches from Samsung come with a wireless charging stand in the box. No more wires to complicate the charging process, all that is need is the watch and the wireless charging stand.
v Compatible with other Android smartphones - The Gear S2 and S2 Classic can function with other Android smartphones. So you are no longer tied to using Samsung phones with a Samsung smartwatch. The possibilities are endless without these restrictions to bind you to what phone you can use.
Battery Life & Display
The sore point for smartwatches is the battery life, which is dismal. The Gear S2 and S2 Classic have made promising steps to improve battery life. While using the Gear S2, we got a whopping three days of use. The display of the Gear S2 is also a step in the right direction, with a higher resolution screen than its predecessor and better sunlight visibility in the days.
Samsung has a lot of new products to offer in the near future, but the Gear S2 and Classic are out now and are real testaments to the level of quality and elegant design the company is pushing forward with.
