Chief Public Health Officer for St Catherine, Richard Baker says the parish is seeing a renewal of cases of Chikungunya.

Speaking at today’s monthly meeting of the St Catherine Parish Council, Baker said the parish has recorded two cases of Chik V.

Additionally, he said there have been seven cases of dengue fever and one case of the Zika Virus.

The zika case was recorded in January.

According to Baker, the St Catherine Health Department, with support from the parish council and other agencies, is on a drive to identify and destroy mosquito breeding sites.

He said the effort seem to be paying off since there is no widespread outbreak of the mosquito-transmitted diseases in St Catherine.

Meanwhile, the chief public health officer made a special plea for persons who might contract the Zika Virus to practice safe sex.

Baker noted that it is well documented that the virus can be transmitted from person to person through sex.
