Chuck calls on judges to dismiss cases running for five years or older
Justice Minister, Delroy Chuck, is calling on judges to dismiss cases that have been in the system for five years and more by the end of 2016.
Chuck says the cases should be dismissed unless there are reasonable grounds for them continuing.
According to the Justice Minister it is not fair for an accused person to go to court for five years hoping to prove their innocence.
He insists that cases must be dealt with within months, similar to procedures in other jurisdictions.
Minister Chuck says timelines must be established for the disposal of cases to ensure efficiency in the justice system and also to protect the rights of Jamaicans.
He says he hopes that over the next few years cases can be tried and completed in as little as a year.
The Justice Minister acknowledged that there are challenges facing the sector, such as the shortage of judges, and noted that measures are being undertaken to address these issues.
