Something to Idolise

After the dawn of the smartphone, there have been numerous changes to its size, screen display, shape, and features. This drive to innovate by manufacturers seems to be dying these last few years, with no real wow moment when a phone is unveiled. Let's see if the Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 (5.5 inches) review can wow you.

Key features

- OS Android 5.1 Lollipop

- Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 CPU

- 13MP rear camera

- 8MP front camera

- 5.5'' touch-screen display

- 2GB of RAM

- 16GB (ROM) of internal storage

- Battery: 2910 mAh

- Stereo speakers

Looking at the specification list, you will notice that the Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 has quite a few similarities to the Digicel DL1000 we reviewed in previous weeks. Apart from the similarities, this phone comes with stereo speakers which most smartphones wish they had.

Build quality and design

The Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 looks and feels superb in the hands. The phone itself is very slim compared to other phones in its competing category, and it's also very light for its size. The phone, unfortunately, does not have a removable battery. So if you destroy your battery by improper charging methods, only your friendly neighbourhood technician can replace your damaged battery. The good thing, though, is that the phone comes with a memory card slot. The construction is a mix between plastic and metal and gives the Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 a real premium look.

Camera quality

The Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 has an 8MP front camera and a 13MP rear camera. Both cameras performs well when you're taking photos on sunny days, but at nights, that quality drops significantly. Although night photos aren't great looking, it is still useable for social media.

Also, the camera has a slight delay in taking pictures. This delay will make it difficult for you to take quick photos on the go without them coming out blurry.

Performance

The Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 performs well for a high-end smartphone, but there are times when the phone would stutter or slow down in certain games while playing. These stutter moments are few and happen randomly, so I wouldn't worry if I were you. We got to test out quite a few games on the Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 and the results were pleasing, especially when you hear your favorite games being played from the built-in stereo speakers on this phone.

Display

Everyone needs a decent screen to look at on the go, and the Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 screen is gorgeous. It has a 1080p display that will make you happy to watch media content. It's sharp, vivid, colourful and bright. I always say that your smartphone should be to view movies, pictures and play games, and the Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 does a remarkable job in all categories.

Outstanding features

Ok, this phone has a radio, but that is not the only trick it has up its sleeves. The Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 is 100 per cent reversible. This means that no matter if you answer the phone upside down, you'll be able to speak and hear the call clearly. The images on the screen also rotate to the orientation, too. In addition, the phone comes with a built-in DJ mixing program called MIX. You get two turntables, samples, audio FX to use at your disposal while playing MP3s.

Final thoughts

The Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 is a high-end smartphone moderately impressive with its unique features. The build quality and design of this phone is also a reason why heads may turn in this phone's general direction.
