Use of Automated System for Customs Data now mandatory

The Jamaica Customs Agency says as of today, it will be mandatory for customers to use the Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA) to declare all items that they import and export.

The program allows customers to make customs payments electronically and retains a perpetual electronic record of all transactions.

The Customs department says ASYCUDA also allows real time viewing of entry declarations which help to prevent freight fraud, undervaluing and smuggling of goods.

Customs also says the Automated System for Customs Data will result in greater efficiency and client service improvements.

The Customs Department is reminding the public that importers who breach the Customs Act, may be liable to pay a penalty of up to $1 million for each offense.
