Carreras forging new paths

Carreras Limited is in the process of expanding its portfolio with new legal affairs manager, Ashleigh-Ann Arnold, declaring that the company's vision for the future is anything but foggy.

The leading marketer and distributor of cigarettes and tobacco-related products in Jamaica has signalled that it is gearing up to engage the new political administration even as it forges a novel path in the local market.

"First and foremost is the need to advance the key objectives of the company as it relates to its priorities of optimally distributing its famed products," said Arnold.

She noted that with every changing government, there is likely to be a change in the agenda in terms of regulation and policies.

"For this year, we will continue to state our desire to have open consultation with the new Government on policies and regulations affecting our industry," she said.

Arnold, who has been at Carreras for nine years, disclosed that she has been charged with acquainting herself with the regulatory agenda of the Government.

Within this context, she shared that she has been tasked with ensuring that the company is included in discussions and consultation on smoking regulations.

Arnold replaced former head of corporate and regulatory affairs, Christopher Brown, tasked with taking on the challenges emerging out of the regulatory changes initiated by former health minister, Dr Fenton Ferguson, in 2013.

This time around, Arnold's focus will be on new health minister, Dr Christopher Tufton. Brown has been promoted to the position of head, Legal and External Affairs, Caribbean; he joined Carreras Limited in 2009 as the corporate and regulatory affairs manager.

In his new role, Brown's responsibility has been expanded to include all 24 markets within the Caribbean business unit.




Having taken over the slate of local functions, Arnold told The Gleaner that Carreras will, this year, roll out what is being dubbed a 'route to market structure'.

"Over the past three years, we have been looking at the way we distribute our products and have identified the need for efficiencies in order to optimise the way we deliver our products to our customers," she asserted.

Arnold revealed that finalisation of the initiative took place in February. "We believe that we have the best fit, structurally, to lead the company into the future in terms of how we distribute our products," she asserted in an interview with The Gleaner.

She said this was concentrated on using motorcycles to get its product into every nook and cranny of the island.

"We had a new organisational exercise, particularly for our distribution team and, this year, the major focus for the country is really integrating that structure into the overall structure," she explained.

"This will mean incorporating the sales representatives who are in place with motorcycles, so there are bike for the sales representatives," she said.

Added Arnold: "A major part of my focus in this new role is helping the organisation to integrate these individuals into their new roles, thereby supporting the business in optimally distributing our products."
