A man who reportedly disarmed a police constable of an M-16 assault rifle outside the Olympic Gardens Police Station in St Andrew a short while ago has been shot dead in a public passenger vehicle.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has identified him as 23-year-old Odane Bennett of an Olympic Gardens address.

INDECOM said it's believed that Bennett was recently treated for mental issues at the Kingston Public Hospital and the University Hospital of the West Indies.

The Corporate Communications Unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force has confirmed that a man was fatally shot near the Olympic Gardens Police Station, but said it was still gathering information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

However, Senior Public Relations Officer at INDECOM Kahmile Reid said the agency has been informed that the constable was sitting in a marked police vehicle when Bennett snatched his M-16 and ran into a minibus.

Reid said according to accounts reaching INDECOM, Bennett was confronted by the police as passengers were getting out of the minibus.

She said that is when he was shot.

The INDECOM spokeswoman said the agency has dispatched four investigators to the scene.

She said forensic tests are being undertaken and witnesses are being interviewed.
