25 per cent toll discount for North-South highway extended to May 22
The Transport Ministry says the 25 per cent discount on toll charges to use the North-South Link of Highway 2000 has been extended until May 22.
The toll discount would have expired tomorrow.
The discount was initially announced after objection to the rates, which were as high as $3,700.
Transport and Mining Minister Mike Henry says the extension of the discount was agreed on in a meeting with toll stakeholders yesterday.
In the meantime, Henry says negotiations are continuing with the aim of settling at an 'equilibrium toll' taking into account traffic count.
"This could play a significant role in determining the final outcome," Henry said in a statement from the Transport Ministry.
He also said an equilibrium toll would be economically viable for the operators and affordable for the road users.
At the same time, Henry wants the toll operators to complete the 'Rest Stop' at Unity Valley, near the Moneague exit so that it can be opened in May.
The structural works have been completed, but there is no electricity and water.
