The Government has allocated some $250 million to the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) to buy new garbage trucks.

The money was allocated in the 2016/17 Estimates of Expenditure now before the House of Representatives.

An additional $5 million will go towards the hiring consultants to assist in preparing a proposal for the implementation of a project to manage discarded tyres at the Riverton landfill.

After receiving several complaints from residents regarding the backlog in the collection of waste and an increase in rodent infestation, last month Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie pledged to improve the garbage collection system across the island.
