Postal service to get upgrade
The Government is to spend $38.9 million this fiscal year to upgrade the country's postal service to an international postal system.
The money has been set aside in the 2016-2017 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives.
To be implemented by the Ministry of Energy, Science and Technology, the upgrade will result in an increase in the ability of Jamaica Post to control and improve mail processing and handling.
This is to be achieved through the procurement of computer equipment and furniture to be delivered to post offices islandwide. The implementation of the technology and training will be completed islandwide.
The project is funded by the Universal Postal Union, an international organisation which helps to ensure a universal network of up-to-date products and services. Completion is expected by June 2017.
