Fishing communities to receive support

Fishing communities across the island are to receive additional support in building resilience against climate change.

This is through an allotment of J$12.9 million to the Promoting Community-based Climate Resilience in the Fisheries Sector project in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries.

As contained in the 2016/17 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives, the allocation will go towards hiring a project executive assistant, recruiting an environmental management specialist and project development specialist, identifying alternative livelihoods for the fishing communities, and strengthening the capacity of the Ministry to carry out project preparation and implementation.

The project, which began in December 2015, is being implemented through funding from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Develop-ment. It is slated for completion in July 2017.
