A collaboration between the European Union (EU) and the Jamaican Government will provide the support to rehabilitate a small-scale plantain and banana multiprocessing plant in St Mary, the head of operations for the EU delegate in Jamaica, Achim Schaffert, said.

Speaking earlier this week in Port Maria, St Mary, Schaffert pointed out that the project marked the end of direct EU funding for the banana industry, and urged farmers to focus their energies on producing specifically for the local and Caribbean markets.

He told the audience at the All-Island Banana Growers Association's 39th annual general meeting: "Analysis shows the local banana market could bring relief to small producers, assuming they could supply that market with the required volumes of products of constant quality.

Member of Parliament for Western St Mary Robert Montague said the launch of the processing plant indicated that the banana industry had great potential for growth, development, and diversification.
