Education Minister wants private operators to take over school tuck shops

According to Senator Reid the operation of tuck shops and canteens distract from the primary goal of teaching and learning.

The Education Minister, Senator Ruel Reid, wants public schools to turn over the running of tuck shops and canteens to private operators.

It is part of the approach of the ministry in pushing for institutions to focus more attention on their core functions.

He also said schools may expose themselves to financial and accountability issues when they take on these activities.
