Completion deadline for Royalton Negril hinges on probe

Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Desmond McKenzie (centre), and technical officers from the ministry and representatives of the Royalton Negril Hotel view the collapsed section of the property during a tour in Hanover on Friday.

The owners of the 573-room Royalton Negril resort say it is too early to determine whether the 30-day stop order imposed by the government would delay the opening of the property.

Construction of Royalton Negril began in February and is expected to be completed in December in time for the start of the winter tourist season.

On Tuesday, the lobby section of the building collapsed, injuring five workmen, one of whom was trapped in the rubble for several hours.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, deputy managing director of Blue Diamonds Hotels and Resorts, Daniel Diaz, said meeting the December deadline would depend on the outcome of the probe now taking place.

However, Diaz says he is confident that with the commitment of all stakeholders the hotel will open in December as scheduled.
