Amid rising tensions in Venezuela, the opposition spokesman on Foreign Affairs Dr Morais Guy says his party supports the rights of Venezuelans to choose their own government as they seek to achieve national development.

Some Venezuelans have been calling for President Nicolás Maduro to resign, amid food and electricity shortages and a looming economic collapse.

The protests forced President Maduro to call on the international community to support his government as the people debate a referendum to oust his party from office.

Guy says he is aware of the commitment of the Maduro government to Jamaica through the PetroCaribe agreement which allows Jamaica to get cheaper oil from Venezuela.

Guy also sought to make it clear that his party has no intention of meddling in Venezuela's internal political affairs.

However, he says the PNP is in support of any decision that is in the best interest of the Venezuelan people.

Efforts to reach the foreign affairs minister, Kamina Johnson Smith for a comment were unsuccessful.

President Maduro has increased the powers of the military and police forces to maintain public order.
