A policeman was this morning shot and injured after he was ambushed by men traveling in two motor vehicles along Maxfield Avenue, St Andrew.

Superintendent in charge of the St Andrew South division, Arthur Brown, says the policeman was traveling in a motorcar towards Half-Way Tree when men in a gold Toyota Corolla blocked his path and fired shots at him.

The policeman reportedly returned the fire, but was attacked from behind by men travelling in a separate motor vehicle.

The men reportedly escaped.

It is unclear whether any of the attackers were injured during the shootout.

The policeman is being treated at hospital.
