According to UAWU President, Senator Lambert Brown, the action contravened the Labour Relations Code and the collective labour agreement with Noranda.

The University and Allied Workers Union (UAWU) has asked Noranda Jamaica Bauxite to reconsider its recent decision to lay off workers.

On Monday, more than 30 employees were sent home.

According to UAWU President, Senator Lambert Brown, the action contravened the Labour Relations Code and the collective labour agreement with Noranda.

He contends that there was no consultation with the union and workers before the layoff exercise was implemented as is required.

The matter was discussed at a meeting on Tuesday.

However, Brown says the union has not received a response to its concerns.
