JATOO bemoans proposed toll hike

At least one transport group is bemoaning the proposed hike in toll fees announced by the operators of Highway 2000.

The toll operators are requesting an increase of up to $110 in toll rates come next month.

If approved, the increase will affect motorists using the Portmore, Spanish Town, Vineyards and May Pen toll plazas.

However, Louis Barton, the president of the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO), says the proposed rates are unfair to transport operators especially since the gas tax and fuel prices were recently increased.

Barton says the burden on transport operators is worsened by the fact that they have not been given a fare increase.

Barton says JATOO is calling for the Transport Ministry to reduce the fees for renewing licences to offset the various increases that operators have been subjected to.

He says his organisation will be raising the issue of the proposed toll rates with transport minister Mike Henry.
