Labour Minister Shahine Robinson says child labour is widespread in the business supply chain across markets with a global estimate of 168 million children being engaged in various forms of employment.

Jamaican companies that conduct business with overseas entities to supply their businesses are being urged to become more proactive in ensuring they are not engaging in child labour.

Labour Minister Shahine Robinson says child labour is widespread in the business supply chain across markets with a global estimate of 168 million children being engaged in various forms of employment.

Robinson says Jamaican businesses may not be knowingly engaging in the abuse of children, but notes that the nature of the global economy and international trade makes it difficult for them to be absolutely sure that those with whom they do business are not engaged in child labour.

The labour minister says that’s why businesses must become vigilant in evaluating those with which they have deal.

Robinson made the appeal in her message to mark World Day against Child Labour, which was observed yesterday.
