Health officials in Clarendon say a number of persons in the parish have mistaken rashes caused by skin bleaching as those caused by the Zika virus (ZIKV).

Clarendon is one of the parishes that has reported a high number of suspected Zika virus cases.

However, according to Acting Medical Officer for Clarendon Dr Fatoumata Fadji Sylla-Roberts after close examination, health officials have ruled out ZIKV in many cases as some rashes are caused by fungal infections as a result of skin bleaching chemicals.

Meanwhile, she says the Clarendon Health Department has been visiting schools and communities report large numbers of suspected Zika cases.

However, Dr Sylla- Roberts says the health staff is overwhelmed because they too have been affected by ZIKV-like symptoms.
