British Member of Parliament Jo Cox has been killed after being shot and stabbed in an attack in her constituency.

Cox, 41, was the Labour MP for Batley and Spen, was left bleeding on the ground by her attacker.

The police say Cox was shot three times before being stabbed by her attacker.

A 52-year-old man was arrested nearby.

"This is a very significant investigation," the British Police said adding that sleuths were trying to find the motive for the killing.

One witness said the suspect shouted "Britain first" as he attacked the politician.

"Somebody tried to grab him, wrestling with him and then he wielded a knife, like a hunting knife, just started lunging at her with a knife half a dozen times. People were screaming and running from the area," the witness said.
