Samuda to implement new lobster fishing regime
The Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Karl Samuda is to implement a new lobster regime for the 2017/2018 lobster season.
A protocol is now being undertaken and Samuda says it should be completed by October.
Jamaican fishermen have long complained about access to fishing licenses and illegal poaching by foreign fisherfolk.
According to Samuda, the lobster regime, which was created with the participation of industry stakeholders, will detail the guideline for the granting of lobster licenses.
He has sought to assure that the process will be equitable, with due consideration to the management of the resource in a sustainable way.
Samuda also said the regime will encourage greater investment in the acquisition of boats, as well as marketing and research and development.
He also said it will facilitate jobs in the sector.
