NYS to launch shoe drive

The National Youth Service (NYS) will launch a shoe drive in July as part of its annual volunteer initiative.

This project is to assist all persons in need, including young people preparing for the new school term.

The NYS is inviting businesses and the wider public to donate new pairs of shoes to the project.

Senior Programmes Director of the NYS Naketa West said the NYS plans to get persons organised to donate shoes "so that we can give them to young persons in need".

Each NYS programme is supported by a volunteer component, with the shoe drive being an extension of the summer work programme.

"The shoe drive was crafted after consultation with the field team and other stakeholders to find out the needs of the people and how best the organisation could help," Placement Services Coordinator of the NYS Lancelot McCalla said.

In 2015, the volunteer initiative was a book drive. These projects are aligned with the NYS core value of volunteerism.
