According to Justice Minister Delroy Chuck, Attorney General Marlene Malahoo Forte did not definitively state that people’s rights will be infringed.

The Justice Minister Delroy Chuck has described as unfair criticisms of the Attorney General Marlene Malahoo Forte following her comments that the rights of some Jamaicans will be infringed as the Government seeks to cut crime.

According to Chuck, the attorney general did not definitively state that people’s rights will be infringed.

He said Malahoo Forte had merely indicated that these were considerations.

This was the comment of the attorney general last week as she made her contribution to the Sectoral Debate.

Chuck says he would not support any move for trial by judge alone in non-capital murder cases.

This was another idea put forward by Malahoo Forte last week.

The Justice Minister says, however, that there are some crime like gun crimes and human trafficking that he would be willing to support judge-alone trial.

He is also maintaining that bail is a right and so he would not endorse the general denial of bail for people charged with certain crimes.
