A third person has died as a result of a terrible bus crash on the east-bound lane of Highway 2000 last night.

Meanwhile, 17 other persons including four children remain in hospital.

The deceased have been identified as are 54-year-old bus driver Everton Melhado of Dawkin district in James Hill, Clarendon; 67-year-old Veronica Edwards of Trout Hall Pass district, also in Clarendon, and 60-year-old Hortense Barnett.

The loaded minibus, registered as a public passenger vehicle, crashed at a section of the highway between the Vineyards toll plaza and the Spanish Town exit around 10:30 last night after a tyre reportedly blew out.

The bus reportedly flipped over several times before coming to a halt on its roof.

As some medical personnel sent stretchers into the trampled grass to recover the injured passengers, others fitted neck braces on moaning victims unable to help themselves.

Some of the passengers were sent to the Spanish Town Hospital while others were taken to the May Pen Hospital.

The crash comes only weeks after nine people were killed in two separate crashes days apart in St Ann.
