Mandeville hospital gets life-saving equipment
Residents of areas served by the Mandeville Regional Hospital in Manchester will no longer have to travel to Kingston to treat ailments related to the oesophagus, as the ear, nose and throat (ENT) department has received five pieces of equipment to make such procedures possible.
The donation of three suction aspirators and two biopsy forceps was made by the Manchester Wellness Foundation through the proceeds of a walk/run fundraising initiative.
According to chairman of the foundation, Alicia James, the donation has two phases. The first phase includes the donation of equipment for adult surgical procedures, and phase two will be a donation of equipment for pediatric surgical procedures. The latter, she said will be handed over before the end of the year.
Among those who expressed appreciation for the donation was chief executive officer of the hospital, Alwyn Miller.
"They (Manchester Wellness Foundation) have donated to almost every department in this hospital. We are very grateful for the continued support in this regard. The donation of these equipment has significant impact on our ability as a hospital. It helps in improving our staff morale because when our team does not have the appropriate and adequate tools to work with, the morale goes down."
Head of the ENT department, Dr Andrew Manning, explained that as small as the donation may seem, a number of lives will be saved as a result.
"I will tell you with no exaggeration that these five bits of equipment are going to save countless lives. Many persons present to us with ingested foreign objects. We see about three to five persons per week and we currently have to transfer them for it to be removed. This equipment will now allow us to do the procedure at the hospital," he said.
