Desmond McKenzie ... says he has asked the parish council to present him with the new design by next week.

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie says he has instructed the St Catherine Parish Council to create a new design for the Old Harbour Market so that the facility may better accommodate for vendors.

Two weeks ago, scores of vendors lost their wares in a fire which destroyed some 120 stalls in the haberdashery section of the market.

While on a tour of parish council facilities in St Catherine Friday, McKenzie said he has asked the parish council to present him with the new design by next week.

McKenzie could not provide a timeline for the construction of a new market but added that he has urged the vendors to establish a committee that can formerly present their views when the new design for the market has been completed.

In the meantime, McKenzie is reminding vendors that it is not the responsibility of the St Catherine Parish Council to replace the items lost in the fire.

However, he said the council is seeking assistance for the vendors through the Labour and Social Security Ministry.
