Children's Advocate appeals against child abandonment after baby found in shoes box
The Children's Advocate Diahann Gordon Harrison is pleading for parents not to abandon newborns at locations where they are likely to be harmed.
Gordon Harrison's appeal follows news that a one-day-old female was found in a shoebox at the Chapelton Hospital on Saturday night.
The child who was found some time after 10 o'clock by hospital staff was examined by doctors and is said to be healthy.
Gordon Harrison says her office understands that some parents may not believe they are in a position to love and care for their babies.
However, she says despite the negative circumstances, it is never right to abandon children at dangerous locations and without the supervision of responsible adults.
Gordon Harrison says the government usually looks for suitable relatives who are willing to care for abandoned babies before making the decision to place them in state care.
She has appealed to the relatives of the newborn who was abandoned on the weekend to contact the Chapelton police and provide the necessary information.
Meanwhile, the Chapelton police are asking residents of surrounding communities to alert them if they can identify the mother of the newborn,
