Scores seek to adopt one-day-old baby found in shoe box
A doctor at the Chapelton hospital has confirmed that scores of persons have been expressing an interest in adopting the one-day-old baby girl who was abandoned in a shoe box at the Chapelton hospital last Saturday night.
The child who was found some time after 10 o'clock is said to be healthy.
District Medical Officer at the Chapelton Community Hospital, Dr Desmond Brennan said the child was transferred to another facility that is better able to provide specialist care for her.
Dr Brennon says he has received numerous calls from persons desirous of legally adopting the child.
The Child Development Agency (CDA) usually deals with cases of adoption in Jamaica.
Yesterday Children's Advocate Diahann Gordon Harrison suggested that adoption is not the first option that the government considers for children who have been abandoned, adding that responsible adult relatives are usually first sought.
There have been reports that four suspicious persons were seen on the hospital compound shortly before the child was found.
The Chapelton police say they are still searching for the child's mother.
