Barnswell argues that giving local government authorities a greater role in enforcement and collection will help to improve revenue inflows.

President of the Association of Local Government Authorities of Jamaica , Scean Barnswell, wants local government authorities to be given greater autonomy in the collection of property taxes.

Currently, the Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) collects property taxes on behalf of the local government bodies.

Barnswell argues that giving local government authorities A greater role in enforcement and collection will help to improve revenue inflows.

According to him, parish councils have been doing a good job at going after property tax delinquents.

However, the councils still have to rely on other government agencies, including the TAJ, to get information about the delinquents.

While acknowledging that tax information is sensitive, the association president argues that arrangements can be put in place to allow local government authorities to have access to the information.
