#RioGoldRush: Jamaican diver Yona Knight-Wisdom takes historic plunge

Yona Knight-Wisdom makes history today as he represents Jamaica in the Men’s 3-metre springboard diving as action continues on Day 11 of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It is the first time a Jamaican male is competing in diving at the Olympic Games.

Yesterday, the United Kingdom-born Knight-Wisdom took to social media to share his excitement.

“Monday 15th [August] 2016 is when my dream becomes a reality,” he posted on Twitter.

Knight-Wisdom will join 28 other competitors in the preliminary round of the 3-metre springboard event, which get underway at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre at 1:15.

Eight other Jamaican athletes will be in action later today.

Among them are Shericka Jackson and Stephanie Ann McPherson, who will be seeking to add to the country’s medal haul when they contest the finals of the Women’s 400m.

Jackson is drawn in lane 5 while McPherson will run out of lane 8. The race is schedule for 8:45pm.Before that national 110m hurdles champion Omar McLeod is set to make his Olympic debut. The former Kingston College star is scheduled to run out of lane 1 in the opening round heat of the Men’s 110m hurdles.

Deuce Carter – heat 2, lane 7 – and Andrew Riley – heat 3, lane 6 – are the other Jamaicans who will contest the 110 metre hurdles, which is scheduled to get underway at 6:40pm.

Less than an hour later Ristananna Tracey, Janieve Russell and Leah Nugent are scheduled to run in the qualifying round of the Women’s 400m hurdles. Tracey will run out of lane 7 in heat 1, Russell will run out of lane 3 in the second heat while Nugent will run out of lane 7 in the third heat.
