Parents are being urged to use the government’s textbook rental system and avoid making unnecessary purchases.

Education Minister Senator Ruel Reid is reminding parents that the ministry offers free textbooks for primary school students, while there is a book rental system in place for students at the secondary level.

A consumer survey has shown a four percent increase in the prices of books this year.

Meanwhile, Reid says as of this year, a book rental programme will be introduced at sixth form.

The new school year is to begin in another two weeks.

Senator Reid was delivering the keynote address at the Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS) 2016 Scholarship awards ceremony.

He told the 54 VMBS scholarship recipients that the investment made by the financial institution in their education will help in Jamaica's development prospects.

The education minister also urged parents to support their children from primary school to university.
