Grange ... an initial report from the JNHT team indicated that there appeared to be no major damage to the tower.

The Culture Minister Olivia Grange has instructed the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) to implement measures to ensure that there is no further damage to the Half-Way Tree Clock Tower.

Yesterday, firefighters were called to the tower after smoke was seen billowing from the landmark.

Grange says an initial report from the JNHT team indicated that there appeared to be no major damage to the tower.

But she says the clock itself was exposed to the fire.

Grange says other assessments will be done but the Trust must now do whatever is necessary to protect the historic landmark from any exposure.

The Jamaica Fire Brigade yesterday said it was uncertain how the blaze started, but confirmed that garbage at the base of the tower was on fire.
