Power fully restored; details on cause of blackout tomorrow - JPS
The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) says electricity has been restored to all its customers following an islandwide blackout last evening and that it will start supplying details on the cause by tomorrow.
Preliminary indications are that the power failure, which occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. yesterday and lasted for several hours for some customers, was caused by what the JPS term as a procedural error that caused a number of its generating units to go offline simultaneously.
The island’s sole electricity distributor says power was restored within minutes for some customers but full restoration had to be done “gradually and systematically to ensure the safe return of service to everyone”.
It was the second all-island power blackout in four months.
Energy Minister Dr Andrew Wheatley has said the incident is unacceptable and that he should receive a full report on the power blackout by Thursday.
"It should NOT have happened," Wheatley posted on Twitter.
