$552m Gov't contracts awarded under National Textbook Loan Scheme

Four companies have been awarded Government contracts valued at about $552 million to procure and distribute textbooks to schools under the National Textbook Loan Scheme for this academic year.

The companies are Kingston Bookshop Limited, Carlong Publishers (Caribbean) Limited, Book Wizard Limited and Linkar Education Limited.

The highest valued contract of approximately $300 million was awarded to Kingston Bookshop.

The national textbook loan scheme provides textbooks in the major subject areas to students at grades seven to eleven in high school and grades seven to nine at the junior high school level.

Speaking at a back-to-school press conference Education Minister, Ruel Reid, said a total of $800 million would be spent on textbooks this year.

He said then that the delivery of books to schools has started and will be completed by September 30.
