Coal plant decision at least 18 months away – Mining Minister
Mining Minister Mike Henry says a decision on whether a coal plant is to be built at ALPART in St Elizabeth is at least 18 months away.
Chinese company, JISCO, plans to invest up to US$3 billion in the island in taking over Alpart alumina plant and upgrading it into a special economic zone.
It would represent the largest investment within the country by a single entity.
Henry told The Gleaner following a signing ceremony between the Government and JISCO that the energy ministry has yet to set the policy on that development.
Energy Minister Andrew Wheatley was not at the ceremony held at the Office of the Prime Minister.
In describing himself as an environmentalist at heart, Henry explained that the decision on coal would be at least another 18 months.
