Kashi recalls snack bars due to possible contamination

American-based company Kashi has announced a voluntary recall of a variety of snack bars in Jamaica.

According to the company, the snack bars pose potential health risks because the sunflower seeds used in the product might have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children or frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.

Kashi also says healthy individuals may suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

However, the contamination may also result in miscarriages and still birth in pregnant women.
