Sores of persons were taken into custody Tuesday during a series of coordinated police operations in and around downtown Montego Bay, St James.

Deputy Commissioner George Quallo, who has responsibility for territorial operations, said the detainees are now being processed by investigators.

The operations covered parts of downtown Montego Bay and adjoining communities such as Mount Salem.

Since the start of the year 199 people have been killed in St James, making it the bloodiest police division.

There have been increased calls for the law enforcement authorities to take decisive actions to halt the run-away crime rate in the western parish.

On the weekend, the authorities  intensified joint police-military operations ‎and announced plans to establish a Jamaica Defence Force post in MoBay.
