PM: Enterprise team working on waste to energy project

Prime Minister Holness says an enterprise team is now working on a framework for a waste to energy solution for Jamaica.

The team which was established last week is to evaluate proposals that would help to address issues related to the disposal of some solid waste such as plastic bottles, which end up in drains and contribute to floodings.

The Prime Minister says the initiative will also help to provide an income for persons.

Prime Minister Holness has announced a plan to implement a comprehensive waste management programme including the separation of degradable and non-degradable waste.

Meanwhile, he says the government is still on a path to privatise the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NWSMA).

The government wants to see the NWSMA as a regulatory rather than being the chief operator of waste management services.

Holness was speaking in an interview on Nationwide Radio.
