Baby deaths at 'Jubilee' more than reported - Dalley

The Opposition People's National Party (PNP) is claiming that as many as 20 newborns may have died at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital and not seven as reported.

The babies died from sepsis, which the Chief Medical Officer Dr Winston De La Haye has said was due to an organism in the vaginal tracts of their mothers.

In a release this afternoon, Opposition spokesman on health, Horace Dalley, expressed condolences to the parents of the children and said the Opposition was concerned about the situation, which he said appeared to be worsening.

He has called for Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton to disclose reports of newborn deaths from bacterial infections at the Cornwall Regional Hospital and The University Hospital of the West Indies.

Dalley said there have been too many incidents that the minister appeared not be aware.

Tufton had today announced that an investigation into the deaths of the children was launched.
