Opposition Leader, Portia Simpson Miller says the statement inflicts additional pain on the women who are already dealing with the loss of their newborns.

Opposition Leader, Portia Simpson Miller, is expressing concern that the mothers of the newborn babies who died recently at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital are being blamed for their deaths.

The health ministry has said that the four babies died last month after contracting the bacterial infection sepsis from their mothers.

The Health Ministry says it is now contemplating infection screening for all expectant mothers for signs of vaginal or rectal bacteria that may harm their newborn babies.

However, Simpson Miller says the statement inflicts additional pain on the women who are already dealing with the loss of their newborns.

Simpson Miller says the statement is callous and irresponsible given that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of these babies has not been completed.

She says Health Minister, Dr Christopher Tufton should apologise to the mothers.
