Blake wants major drain cleaned
Councillor for the Independence City Division in Portmore Keith Blake is calling for a major drain-cleaning initiative to be centred on cleaning a major drain that stretches from Caymanas to Passage Fort, which serves several communities, including Blake's division.
Blake said if the rains had persisted when Hurricane Matthew had threatened Jamaica, some 3,000 residents living in these areas would have been severely affected.
"This is not about politics. I am appealing to the minister of local government to make the funds available to clean this drain," he stated.
"This drain is a major drain and right now it is causing severe problems for residents. I am aware of the fact that the minister had given the Portmore Municipal Council $30 million for drain cleaning, but, in my opinion, based on the estimates sent in by the council, this amount cannot suffice."
Noted Blake: "The Municipal Council had put in an estimate for $64 million to cover drain cleaning in Portmore and only got 30 million."
Blake also made an appeal to residents to refrain from using the drains as their municipal dump as this only compounds the problem.
