Energy Minister Dr Andrew Wheatley says some 60,000 people have so far switched networks under the number portability system.

He made the disclosure yesterday during an address to the Organisation of Caribbean Utility Regulators conference in St James.

Number portability allows customers to switch networks and retain their phone numbers.

Wheatley told participants at the conference that the implementation of the number portability system shows that the Government is committed to ensure consumer satisfaction in the telecoms market.

The system was implemented last year after several delays.

With a population of about 2.7 million people, Jamaica has about three million active mobile accounts.
