Chuck awaiting results of detailed count of criminal cases before courts
Justice Minister Delroy Chuck says by early next year, he expects to have an accurate count of the number of documented criminal cases within the court system.
Chuck says a statistician has been recruited to collate the figures, which he says will be captured under a statistics and data management system.
He says the move is being facilitated through the Justice Undertaking for Social Transformation (JUST) Programme and is in response to reports of a backlog of 400,000 court cases.
Chuck noted, however, that this figure was likely far-fetched and could be less than 100,000.
He said persons may mistakenly be counting the number of offences for which an individual is charged, rather than treating each offender as one case for trial.
