Devroy Vernon, the man listed by the police as St Ann's most wanted has been shot dead in a reported confrontation with the police.

The police say Vernon, otherwise called Peebo was the leader of the Mini Bank gang in the Mansfield (Falkland) area of Ocho Rios, St Ann.

He was shot dead in a reported gun battle with police personnel on an operation around 4 o’clock Tuesday morning in the Capture Land area of Parry Town.

A policeman was also shot and injured in the attack.

According to Superintendent Gary Francis, the commander of the St Ann police, a loaded Star .40 pistol was recovered but two men escaped.

Francis said the recovery of Vernon's firearm brings to six the number of illegal guns the St Ann police have recovered in the past three weeks and 38 since the start of the year.

"Vernon was wanted for the murder of Brian Henry on June 26, 2016 in Mansfield and was a suspect in two other murders in committed in St Mary and St Ann," Francis told The Gleaner.

Meanwhile, Francis is appealing to other persons on the police wanted list to surrender.

They are:

1. Brian Forbes
2. Dwayne Christie
3. Kimani Pinnock

"Turn yourselves in," he warned.

"We will be relentless in our efforts to bring you to justice."

The commander also sought to reassure law abiding citizens that the police would be doing everything to carry out their mandate to serve, protect and reassure.
