American President-elect Donald Trump has arrived in Washington to meet President Barack Obama at the White House for talks about the transition of power.

The meeting, which is being held behind closed doors, could be awkward as the Republican president-elect has questioned Obama's US citizenship and has vowed to dismantle his legacy.

Obama, though, has said he is rooting for Trump after his win over Hillary Clinton.

The two men are expected to appear together for the cameras in the Oval Office after the meeting.

The President-elect is being accompanied by his wife, Melania, who will have a meeting with First Lady Michelle Obama.

Thousands have taken to the streets of major US cities with vigils and protests against Trump.
