A total of 489 candidates were nominated yesterday to contest the 16th Local Government elections scheduled for November 28.

The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECG) says both the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People’s National Party (PNP) have nominated candidates for all 228 divisions islandwide as well as the Portmore mayoral election.

The ECG says 31 persons were nominated to contest 24 divisions as independent candidates or representatives of the National Democratic Movement and the Marcus Garvey People’s Political Party.

In a statement today, Director of Elections Orette Fisher said nomination day proceedings were incident free.

Fisher says the Electoral Office will now shift focus to ensure that everything is in place for local government elections.

This, he says, include assigning symbols to independent candidates and creating draft templates for each ballot to ensure accuracy before they are printed.
