St Catherine to get new cemetery
The need for burial space in St Catherine is to be eased with the expansion of the Church Pen Cemetery in Old Harbour in the parish.
There's been a shortage of burial space for years with the St Catherine Parish trying to secure additional lands to satisfy the demand.
Chairman of the St Catherine Parish Council and Mayor of Spanish Town, Norman Scott, says s the council’s efforts have borne fruit as the National Environment and Planning Agency has now granted the council a permit to open the Tethford Cemetery.
Scott says the new cemetery is situated on a 25-acre property in Church Pen district and will fill the need now catered to by the Church Pen Cemetery, which is almost at capacity.
Last August, he indicated that the parish council had so far spent just over $17 million to undertake works on 10 acres of land, including the erection of a chapel, crematory and an area reserved to bury infants.
