PAJ: Jamaica must support call for appointment of UN rep for safety of journalists
The Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) has thrown its support behind a campaign for the appointment of a Special Representative to the United Nation (UN) Secretary General for the Safety of Journalists.
The PAJ is urging the Government of Jamaica to support the initiative within the halls of power at the UN.
The campaign was started by the international group Reporters Without Borders in response to data which shows that 787 journalist have been killed in the last 10 years while carrying out their duties.
Last year alone Reporters Without Borders say 65 journalist were killed across the Globe.
PAJ President Dionne Jackson Miller says the appointment of a Special Representative to the UN Secretary General would be very important in helping to ensure the implementation of the Plan for the Safety of Journalists.
